Anxiety disorders – Adjustment Disorder

A person is diagnosed with an Adjustment Disorder when they experience major distress or feel unable to cope with day to day life after having been exposed to a stressful situation, or multiple stressful situations (eg a relationship ending, work, financial or relationship problems, a chronic medical condition).

The person’s distress and reaction are greater than would normally be expected in the face of the particular stressful situation.

An Adjustment Disorder is not diagnosed where someone is distressed or experiencing coping problems following a bereavement.
